Yesterday (April 4th, 2014) was the long-awaited album release for The Ohio Weather Band. The doors opened at 8:30 pm at Musica in downtown Akron and it was immediately packed. The music started promptly at 9 with another local favorite of mine Cody J. Martin.
Cody J. Martin is one of those type of artists that consistently put on a good show. I’ve heard him play 3 or 4 times and I have yet to be disappointed. The combination of his country/folk sound with thoughtful lyrics brings out the deepest of emotions. He’s such a great musician and nice guy!
The Hawkeyes are an Americana rock band out of Pittsburgh, PA. This was the first time that I heard them play and I thought they were good. They have a raw, gritty sound with a heavy country influence. It is reminiscent of older rock. They were a quick change from Cody’s more soothing, laid-back sound. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out on this band.
Now, the ones you’ve all been waiting for.
The Ohio Weather Band are my absolute favorite local band. As many of you know, I’ve been following them closely since their show with Kevin Devine. For those of you who don’t, The Ohio Weather Band is a 4-piece rock outfit from Alliance, OH with country, americana, and blues influences. They are made up by lead vocalist/guitarist, Corey King, bassist/vocalist, Derek Strata, keyboardist/vocalist, Ray Lumpp, and drummer, Pete Childerson.
Let me tell you, they rocked the house. The energy in the place was amazing and you could tell that everyone was enjoying themselves. There were calls for an encore immediately after they finished and they gave a hell of a good one. This is one band that you really can’t dislike (at least in my opinion but I’m a bit bias).
A few of my favorite songs were “Whole Damn Town” and “She is the Devil.” They also covered “When My Time Comes” by Dawes and even “Proud Mary” with the help of Cody J. Martin and Jay Wiley from the Hawkeyes.
This band knows how to perform. They were so grateful to the people who came out and everyone that has helped them along the way. They all seem like such good guys. I’m so happy for them and I wish them all the success. Everyone should check them out and get their album. It would be a disservice to yourself if you don’t. I’ve been listening to it all day.
Side Note: In addition to an amazing show, I was recognized by someone who follows the blog! If you’re reading this, thank you guy! You really made my day. I really appreciated your kind words.
Thanks for reading,
