The FRESH Art Show had its opening reception on Friday, March 7th, at Summit Artspace. It is a juried contemporary art exhibition that is focused on fresh, “progressive ideas with contemporary art techniques.” This show is a testament to the thriving art scene in the Akron area.
Looking around, there were a few pieces that I really loved and a few that left me scratching my head. One or two even disturbed me. I don’t necessarily think that’s a bad thing. Art that provokes any emotion is doing its job right and should be celebrated.
A friend of mine (Hunter L V Elliott) had a piece in the show which was the main reason that I went. His is called, “Discard This Item.” It’s a set of cards that are screen printed with varnish and scratch off overlay (below, on the right). One of the cards says, “Have this item cast in bronze/that is now the original work/Discard this item.” I’m a big fan of the simplicity of it.
I was also a big fan of the two pieces below. They were really cool to look at and the detail in the hand is incredible.
Here are a few other photos from the show.
