Several weekends ago, I finally got a change to attend Wandering Aesthetics’ Boogers, Witches, & Haints: Spooky Stories From Appalachia show. The creators of Wandering Aesthetics, Kyle Jozsa and Benjamin Rexroad, hiked the Appalachian Trail a few years back and collected stories along the way. This show was a retelling of those stories set on a bare bones porch called the Cuckoos Nest.
They packed the room, selling out the show, as Kyle began weaving his tales of Boogers, Witches, and Haints. When the story began, his movements and voice changed as he captured the feel of each character. The first story about the stolen tail was probably the creepiest, but each left a slight chill to my bones.
In between the stories, Kyle and Benjamin chatted with the audience. Jokes were made and we got a bit of background about where they acquired each of their stories.
Kix, the technician, expertly worked the lighting while each tale unfolded before us. It definitely set the proper mood.
Overall, it was a great evening with stories that I wouldn’t normally run across in my daily life.
Next up, Wandering Aesthetics’ EPCooker (anything goes open mic) returns at the None Too Fragile Theatre at Pub Bricco on Saturday, November 29th 7:30pm. After that, they are hosting Cabaret Series – The Mountain Cycle: Tales from Appalachia at the Broadview Heights Spotlights on December 4th. Find more information here.
