Last Friday (October 4th), I had the pleasure of going to an art benefit show featuring a bunch of local artists as well as live music by Comfort Clouds and Light of the Loon at Square Records in Highland Square.
The purpose of the art show was to promote and raise money for the Way Of Mind and Body (W.O.M.B.), a community-owned social/cultural center on E. Market in Akron. This center “seeks to use culture and popular education to inspire our community’s creativity and imagination.” They are running a month-long silent auction for the featured art at Square Records.
I looked into the organization a bit more and found out that it is a 501c3 community center. It is built on the 7 principles of Kwanzaa which are Unity, Self-Determination, Collective Work and Responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, Creativity, & Faith. They place a big emphasis on health, wellness, and art, so they have a community garden as well as art and yoga classes. Not too many people know about this place. I know I didn’t until I heard about the show, so I wanted to help them get the word out because I feel that places like this are really important for the community.
Here are a few photos from the event:
I also filmed a little bit of the show. I’m not a very good videographer, so don’t judge me too harshly. I’m a big fan of both Light of the Loon and Comfort Clouds. If you remember, I did a post about Comfort Clouds a few months ago for the album release.
If you’d like to make donations to The W.O.M.B. you can check out their website, drop by the center, or even participate in the silent auction at Square Records.
